The Financial Supervisors Academy (FSA), the training and academic arm of the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), will conclude its External Training Programme with a workshop dedicated to one of the most significant developments shaping the financial services sector: Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Over the course of the programme, participants have had the opportunity to engage with a series of specialised training sessions covering a variety of topics relevant to today’s evolving financial services landscape. The final workshop will focus on the growing impact of AI on trading and operational systems and the implications for governance, risk management, operational resilience and regulatory compliance.
Entitled “AI in Trading & Operational Systems,” the workshop will be delivered by Professor Maria Lucia Passador, Assistant Professor of Corporate Law and Financial Markets Regulation at Bocconi University. The session will explore how AI is being used across areas such as algorithmic trading, liquidity management, risk modelling, compliance and supervisory activities.
Participants will examine the risks that may arise as financial institutions increasingly rely on AI-driven systems, including the potential for similar technologies and models to be used across the market, reliance on a limited number of technology providers, and the impact AI-driven behaviour may have on liquidity and financial stability. The session will also consider the importance of transparency and explainability when AI is used to support financial and operational decision-making.
The workshop will also explore how the EU AI Act interacts with existing financial services regulation, including MiFID II, DORA and CRR/CRD, and what this means for financial institutions and supervisors. Participants will consider how existing regulatory and prudential requirements can be applied alongside emerging AI obligations and the challenges that may arise when AI systems operate across institutions and jurisdictions.
The session will also consider how RegTech and SupTech can support compliance and supervisory activities and how supervisors can respond to emerging risks associated with AI-driven trading and operational systems. Through a forward-looking approach, participants will be encouraged to consider how appropriate governance and supervisory frameworks can support the safe and resilient use of AI across the financial services sector.
The workshop is intended for financial services professionals, risk and compliance practitioners, legal and regulatory specialists, supervisory authorities and public sector professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of the opportunities and challenges arising from the use of AI in financial services.
The workshop will take place on 14 October 2026 at the MFSA. Further information and registration details are available through the FSA training portal.
